The independent variable in this experiment is what they told the subjects. The dependent variable is how long the subjects thought the time span was in between activities. In the experiment, scientists thought that if a person was told, for example, that gum increases attention, they would pay more attention, then relate it to the gum, rather than actively paying more attention. Then when the subjects were asked how long the activities were apart in time, the subjects who were told that gum increases attention, would think there was a shorter time in between. They tested this with music and gum. The gum was just explained. They way they did it with music was they told one group of people that music helps one be more creative, so again, one group was told, and another wasn't, then they were assigned a task that required some creativity. And again, the people who were told music helped with creativity were more creative. This was a well controlled experiment. Then only faults that I could possibly think of are if the people were already really creative, or if the people already listened better.
